Job Description
What you can expect in a typical day:
Grow for Tomorrow is an exciting new initiative at Irving Oil that will help our organization meet the opportunities and challenges associated with the Global Energy Transition.
In addition to refinery sustaining capital projects, you could be a part of projects including, but not limited to, renewable energy projects, hydrogen and biofuels projects, carbon capture and sequestration projects and clean fuel regulations projects.
As a Refining & Energy Transition Project Development Engineer with Irving Oil, you will support development and execution of capital projects by leading the front development stages (FEL 1 and 2) and supporting FEED / detailed engineering / execution (FEL 3 and 4) stages. Front-end loading (FEL) is a robust pre-project planning and design process early in a project’s lifecycle.

Your Roles and Responsibilities:
Lead and / or actively participate in Front End Loading (FEL) 1 and FEL 2 project activities.
Responsible for communicating and collaborating with project sponsors and key stakeholders as required.
Responsible to develop Project Design Intent documents.
Lead and/or actively participate in benefits analyses and business case development.
Facilitate project work and studies with 3rd party consultants, technology licensors and engineering contractors. Direct, review and approve their work and deliverables.
Lead and / or actively participate in key FEL 2 and FEL 3 project phase process engineering activities (e.g. PFD, P&ID, HAZOP, LOPA reviews, etc.).
Support the development of project schedules, project execution plans and cost estimates.
Support detailed engineering, construction and start-up activities associated with projects (FEL 4).
Professional skills:
Understanding of the basic economic drivers of oil refining.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Effective collaboration skills.
Leadership experience (informal of formal).
Ability to make clear, effective presentations to communicate recommendations to customers and management.
Ability to work independently with limited supervision / direction.
Self-motivated.
Attention to schedule and cost, and timely decision making.
Attention to detail.
Travel:
Occasional Travel may be required.
Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering with P.Eng. or working towards P.Eng.
5+ years of experience in refinery (or equivalent) process engineering.
Refinery process technology knowledge/design experience an asset.
Process simulation skills/experience an asset.
Experience representing the interests of refinery owner/operator in capital project development is a strong asset
