POSITION OVERVIEW

The Fire Protection Designer provides consulting services for private and public sector projects including institutional and infrastructure buildings. The position holder works in a team environment, alongside other experts, and will deal directly with clients, other technical disciplines, and contractors for proposals and the delivery of projects.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Apply Canadian provincial and national Building and Fire Codes, CAN/ULC, NFPA codes and standards, and best practice guidelines related to the design and installation of fire suppression, fire protection and sprinkler systems.
  • Prepare project budgets and proposals. Management of project staffing, profitability, and timelines.
  • Undertake retrofit and design projects including site reviews and assessing the fire protection and wet and dry sprinkler systems in medium and large complexes including but not limited to interconnected towers, multi-use facilities, warehouses, industrial and commercial facilities.
  • Conduct site visits to gather data on existing conditions and review construction, review shop drawings, attend tests, and commission the systems.
  • Provide hydraulic calculations, pipe sizing, drawings, and specifications.
  • Wok on staged installation of system replacements to ensure the continued operation during the construction phase.
  • Prepare fire protection, suppression and wet and dry sprinkler specifications and tender documents and oversee installation to ensure compliance by contractors.
  • Attend construction and pre-construction site meetings.
  • Develop Alternative Solutions and prepare written reports with cost estimates.
  • Assess performance of existing wet and dry sprinkler, standpipe, fire pumps, and special suppression systems (e.g., low/high expansion foam systems, chemical powder, and clean agent fire suppression systems), selecting proper and cost-effective solutions for replacement using applicable Codes and standards
  • Support internal and external clients by advising on application of Codes and standards.
  • Attending meetings with Clients and with Authorities Having Jurisdiction.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • University Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. P.Eng. is an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience designing new and existing wet and dry fire sprinkler, standpipe, fire pumps, and special suppression systems Excellent knowledge of NBC, NFC, OBC, OFC, and NFPA standards is a must.
  • Experience with site project management, tender documents, and cost estimation.
  • Able to obtain government security clearance is an asset.
  • Good analytical and organizational skills; attention to detail; and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication and client relationship management skills.
  • Self-driven and resourceful with ability to work well independently and to interact with other stakeholders including Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, hydraulic calculation applications, Revit and 3D applications is an asset.
