Job Description:

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Estimator to join the team in Southwest Ontario (Hamilton).

The role of the Senior Mechanical Estimator is to prepares design build tenders where little information is known; as well as preparing budgets based off architectural documents. In collaboration with the Chief Estimator, the Senior Estimator is responsible for the bid closing strategy on every job in areas such as work out alternative/cost savings, deals and virtual plan of execution. The Senior Mechanical Estimator will be responsible to prepare, record and maintain pricing and assist the management team in the ongoing pursuit and acquisition of new work. Experience working within a trade, including within the field will be considered an asset.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performing quantity takeoffs including entry into the computer estimating system.
  • Reviewing all bid documents to ensure all bid requirements are met.
  • Assemble all elements of an estimate including a lead sheet to summarize all the elements.
  • Preparing bid forms and submissions for a tender call or proposal.
  • Calculate a final figure for the estimated cost, supplemented by adjustments for overheads and profit.
  • Present bid package with tender price for clients following their specifications.
  • Understanding the labor variances between project types and apply appropriate correction factors.
  • Provides detailed labor breakdowns for each area to assist with budget creation and management of project.
  • Applies technical experience to interpret documentation, specifications, and design drawings.
  • Assists in the development of estimating plan to establish estimate/proposal strategies.
  • Participates in presentation of estimates/proposals to senior management.
  • Attend and participate in site-visits, pre-bid meeting and post-bid meeting as required.
  • Provides input for determining bid strategies and preparing bids.
  • Works diligently daily towards achieving the group sales targets for the year.

Job Requirements

  • Post-secondary diploma in mechanical or construction technology or other relevant technology field or extensive experience in a mechanical contracting trade. Eng or CET considered an asset or equivalent experience in the field.
  • Minimum 6 years of extensive, practical and successful experience in organizing and preparing cost estimates and proposals for construction projects.
  • Experience in reading and interpreting construction drawings and documents.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) and computerized scheduling packages.
  • Knowledge of construction costs and budgets.
  • Understanding of all facets of the construction process.
  • Applies advanced technical experience/knowledge to interpret documentation, specifications, and design drawings.
  • Ability to calculate mathematical extensions, analyze and understand construction drawings, associated documentation, contracts, cost coding systems and work breakdown structures.
  • Hands on experience preparing all classes of estimates from conceptual to definitive as well as preparing financial and statistical analyses.
  • Excellent leadership skills and ability to effectively lead a team.
  • Excellent time and project management skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in an office and field environment with a high degree of interaction between management, technical and maintenance personnel.
  • Competent in conflict and crisis management.
  • Client service and customer focus to establish and maintain effective relationships with customers.
