Covanta Durham York Renewable Energy Limited Partnership (“Covanta”) is currently seeking a VP Strategic Initiatives and Central Operations to serve as a leader and trusted advisor to the EVP, Chief Operating Officer of Covanta, working with the CFO, CEO and ELT to operationalize and direct the implementation of productivity initiatives to increase profitability for the company and ensure short and long term strategic objectives are met.

This role will enable the successful achievement of core objectives in the Covanta Strategic Plan as defined by the Transformation and Full Potential Plan (FPP). It will ensure alignment of strategic and operational priorities and support enterprise-wide transformation initiatives focused on growing and expanding the capabilities for the organization that enable Covanta to become a market leader in sustainable waste solutions.

The successful candidate will be a resourceful, highly motivated problem solver with strong emotional intelligence, critical thinking skills and executive presence with a strong and proven background in Operational finance and lean. This position will report to the EVP, Central Operations and will work collaboratively with leaders across the businesses.

Main Job Duties:

·       Leads and manages the productivity initiatives and associated financial objectives across the operational team and works closely with the Finance team to ensure the ideas translate into numbers in the ledger.  

·       Partners with the Operating teams on the ground

·       Leads, tracks and manages KPIs to meet the long-term financial goals.

·       Develops and oversees strategic and highly visible initiatives defined by the ELT

·       Serves as a change agent in driving productivity across sourcing, PMO, Engineering and IT

·       Serves in a leadership capacity as a planner and facilitator responsible for supporting the needs of the CFO/COO/CEO and the ELT in achieving the goals defined in the FPP with specific focus on the annual priorities set by the CEO.

·       Helps develop and execute a change management plan and drive operational improvement across the organization.

·       Drives Business operational excellence model – leveraging lean principle – such as KPI, Hoshin Kanri, kaizen.

·       Identifies and executes opportunities for cost optimization via partnership with key stakeholders.

·       Assembles and manages a highly-skilled team of internal consultants to define current state, future state and overall change management for defined initiatives.

·       Serves as an ambassador internally and externally advancing Covanta’s goals and brand.

 Role requirements

Education:                

  • At minimum, a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Business, Finance, Commerce or other related field. CPA degree preferred
  • Minimum 25 years of Finance or Accounting experience, with at least 15 years leadership experience in financial roles with strong operational expertise in the industrial or power generation sectors.
  • Prior experience working in and around power generating plants or large industrial facilities and systems including boilers and combustion, steam generation and distribution, turbine generators, and balance of plant systems.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating and partnering with stakeholders and leaders at a variety of levels and in heavily matrixed organizations.
  • Proven experience improving profitability and reducing cost by optimizing operational capabilities.
  • Strong financial background as an Operational CFO, FP&A, Strategy
  • Prior experience on partnering with regional operational team is required
  • Prior experience in leadership programs that demonstrate fast problem -solving expertise, such as Big Four Accounting firms.

 Excellent Relationship and Matrix Management

  • Must be able to manage across matrix teams exceptionally well and augment or compliment the skill set of the COO to ensure full team effectiveness.
  • Ability to manage complex relationships, build trust, resolve conflict, and drive results while providing significant value to operational partnerships.
  • Comfortable developing a network of industry and out of industry experts in order to research and utilize innovations and best practices from other industries.

 Talent Development & Resource Management

  • Ability to recruit and retain highly skilled team
  • Experience managing the allocation of resources, including internal and external consultant rationalization.
  • Leads or assigns resources for the planning and execution of transformation initiatives including the identification and training of ad hoc resources.
  • Knows how to draw and develop talent from across the organization and assign the right resources to maximize project outcomes and minimize project cost.
  • Builds and maintains employee engagement and motivation; fosters a diverse and inclusive workplace.
  • Ability to develop transformation and business acumen throughout the organization.
