About the role
Director of Construction Planned Leadership Succession Commercial & Institutional Construction | Durham Region, Ontario
A Rare Leadership Succession Opportunity Kellow Recruiting has partnered with one of Durham Region's most respected privately owned Commercial & Institutional General Contractors on a planned leadership succession.
Rather than hiring directly into an executive leadership position, ownership has chosen to develop its future operational leader through a structured transition. During approximately your first year, you'll combine responsibilities similar to a Senior General Superintendent with increasing operational leadership exposure while learning the company's people, clients, projects and culture.
The objective is simple: learn the business, build credibility and transition into long-term operational leadership.
Why This Opportunity Exists One of the company's senior operational leaders is approaching retirement. Rather than replacing decades of experience overnight, ownership has invested in a structured succession plan designed to ensure a successful long-term transition. You'll work alongside the existing leadership team, gradually assuming greater operational responsibility while being set up for long-term success.
You'll Be Supported This isn't a "sink or swim" leadership opportunity. You'll work directly alongside ownership and the existing operational leadership team, giving you the opportunity to learn the business, build trusted relationships and develop the knowledge needed to succeed. The goal isn't simply to fill a position. It's to prepare the company's next operational leader.
The Ideal Background This opportunity is designed for experienced construction leaders who have progressed beyond running individual projects and now enjoy developing people, strengthening operations and mentoring future leaders.
You may currently be a: Director of Construction | Construction Operations Manager | Regional Construction Manager | Senior Construction Manager | Senior General Superintendent
While backgrounds will naturally vary, we're looking for leaders with proven experience managing field operations, multiple projects and construction teams who are ready to broaden their operational impact within an established Commercial & Institutional General Contractor.
Key Requirements • Minimum 10 years of Commercial & Institutional construction leadership experience. Please Note: Candidates without significant Commercial & Institutional construction experience will not be considered.
Proven experience leading multiple active construction projects simultaneously. Experience managing Site Superintendents, Project Managers and field teams. Strong operational expertise in scheduling, sequencing, constructability, logistics and project execution. Experience using Procore, Bluebeam and modern construction reporting systems. A collaborative leadership style built around accountability, mentorship and developing high-performing teams.
Location Approximately 70% of projects are located throughout Durham Region, with the balance across the Central and East GTA.
Candidates should currently reside within Durham Region or the Central to East GTA. Relocation will only be considered where there is an immediate, genuine and long-term commitment to becoming part of the Durham Region community.
Your First Year Your first year has been intentionally designed to provide both field leadership and operational development before transitioning into broader leadership responsibilities. You will: Provide leadership across approximately 10-20 Commercial & Institutional projects. Mentor and support approximately 30 Site Superintendents and field personnel. Strengthen scheduling, sequencing, constructability, logistics and project execution across multiple active sites. Work alongside ownership while learning the company's operations, systems, clients and culture. Build trusted relationships with employees, clients, consultants and trades. Prepare for a planned transition into senior operational leadership.
Compensation First-year compensation is expected to be $150,000-$190,000, depending on experience, together with vehicle, fuel, 407, technology, benefits and incentive programs. This reflects the initial operational leadership phase of the succession plan.
Should the succession plan progress as anticipated and responsibilities evolve accordingly, compensation will be reviewed and aligned with the expanded scope of the role.
