Reporting to the Manager, Program Delivery, the Advisor Seals and Sealing is responsible for all matters relating to the development and support of programs, targeted outreach/promotion of seal programs, as well as overseeing the inventory including the grading/sale/invoicing/shipping of seal skins and all other programs or projects related to the sealing sector in Nunavut. The Advisor will be the Division’s lead for networking and working with Inuit Organizations within and outside the territory to advance the needs of Nunavummiut in the sealing industry.
The Advisor Seals and Sealing’s main responsibilities are but are not limited to:
Leading delivery, promotion, inventory, distribution, pickup/shipping of Qisiapiit (Dressed Sealskins for Nunavummiut) and acting as a resource to Wildlife Officers and others who have questions about seal programs. Stewarding, maintaining and repairing the Sealskin Garment Collection, as well as scheduling cleaning and adding/retiring pieces with documentation. Leading on Grant and Contribution Programs, monitoring intake of applications and ensuring clear decisions are recorded. Providing monthly funding status updates, coordinating documentation with Finance, and producing an end of year report on uptake, approvals, outcomes, and lessons learned. Ensuring all application forms, guidance, agreements, and communications are available in Nunavut official languages, Inuktitut, English, French. Drafting and reviewing backgrounders and briefing notes, providing research and reports on sector topics to the Manager along with preparing presentations, and coordinating public information products.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through the completion of the Arctic College’s Environmental Technology Program or a related College Diploma from a recognized institution plus four (4) years of relevant experience. Assets include fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages. This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
