Job Summary:

CSA Group has an immediate opportunity for a Manager, Strategic Initiatives (SIM), reporting to the Director, Electrical, Standards. The Manager of Strategic Initiatives will be responsible for providing leadership and direction to support the development and execution of strategic priorities within the electrical sector standards portfolio.

This role focuses on advancing initiatives in the electrical sector related to the Canadian Electrical Code Parts I, II and III, energy efficiency, renewable energy systems, and electrical energy storage technologies. The position supports identification of emerging issues, development of strategic plans, and execution of initiatives aligned with sector priorities, including securing funding to enable this work.

The SIM will be responsible for advancing proactive, leading-edge initiatives to support standard development activities, and successfully identifying emerging trends and technologies. A highly creative individual, with a strategic mindset, the SIM in coordination with the programs will explore new areas of interest, developing a strong understanding of the existing landscape, key actors, and roadblocks, and will assess the potential need for standards-based solutions. The SIM will be able to build and nurture relationships with key public and private organizations, identifying and pursuing opportunities for deeper collaboration. Working at the intersection of research and standardization, the Manager, Strategic Initiatives will also focus on addressing gaps through CSA research-based initiatives and pursuing new standards-based opportunities to mobilize knowledge. Working with Technical Committees and cross-sectoral staff, the Manager of Strategic Initiatives would help ensure cross program and cross sector coordination on standardization activities and research. In close collaboration with the Director, Electrical Standards, and Program Manager’s for Electrical Safety and Energy Efficiency and Renewables, the SIM will directly contribute to the development of the sector’s strategic plan.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance and leadership outside of direct reporting relationships to motivate and focus staff to achieve strategic business objectives and as required building consensus, obtaining buy-in, and presenting recommendations in oral and written formats.
  • As part of the management team, participates in defining functional strategies and leading, directly and indirectly, aspects of strategy implementation. Monitor and provide ongoing review of active and planned initiatives against plan, recommending adjustments as necessary.
  • Identify development opportunities as they relate to new business, new markets, portfolio exits or enhancements to meet program, divisional and cross-divisional goals
  • Support market strategies with business development activities to achieve short-term and long-term revenue objectives. Activities include networking, member and client liaison.
  • Deliver excellence in stakeholder relationship management, both with internal and external senior-level stakeholders, to build support and buy-in for key business initiatives. This activity includes development and management of strategic alliances, issues monitoring and management, representation in external forums and determination of CSA Group positioning.
  • Monitor external and internal environments for relevant opportunities.
  • A key interface with CSA Group Government Relations and Policy to monitor relevant key policy developments in jurisdictions across North America and internationally. Provide policy/government relations support, understand and/or respond to the needs of government officials/departments (e.g. consultations, relationship building).
  • Promote reference to CSA Group standards in legislation, programs or through other channels as appropriate (Note: Position is uniquely oriented within program area to direct and influence key work items).

Education:

An undergraduate or graduate degree in a science or engineering discipline, or other related area of study.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years experience in relationship management, business planning, project management and budgeting, with 3-5 years’ experience in Standards Development or Project Management.

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in a Business, Government or Not for Profit environment.

  • Experience in standards development.

  • Experience with business development and planning.

  • Experience with delivering formal presentations to senior level management and large audiences.

  • Strong understanding of funding and research opportunities.

  • Working knowledge and understanding of federal/provincial/territorial government priorities and industry sector plans.

  • Expertise in preparation of complex applications and proposals

Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively, generate new ideas, and take initiative.
  • Proven ability to lead by influence.
  • Strong facilitation and stakeholder engagement capabilities.
  • Ability to self-manage, influence others without direct reporting authority, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Travel:

Some travel will be required.

The typical hiring range for this position is $113,470 –$148,930 CAD gross annually. The actual base pay offered will depend on factors such as education, licenses, certifications and experience. As part of our total rewards offering, permanent employees in this position may be eligible for our annual bonus program, subject to program eligibility requirements.
