The base salary will be $88,690 - $126,560 per annum. Starting salary will be aligned with the successful candidate’s experience, skills, and demonstrated qualifications.

Responsibilities
The Director, International Research provides leadership to strategically advance Western’s global research funding and research partnership portfolio with a focus on institution to institution and/or alliance of institutions models. The role will focus on identifying, developing, and supporting international research funded opportunities beyond North America, including major programs such as Horizon Europe and other global funding streams that will build a record of international partnerships (e.g., Radboud). The Director will lead a team focused on working collaboratively across Western including Western Research, Western International, Faculties, Interdisciplinary Units (e.g., Institutes, Academies) and with external partners to strengthen international research engagement, coordinate institutional efforts to establish and promote international research collaborations through grant applications, grant awards, and post-award activities with the goal to enhance Western’s global research impact and reputation. The role will ensure that international research development activities are aligned with Western’s strategic priorities and are delivered through effective, compliant, and client-focused processes.
Qualifications
Education:
- Master’s Degree in a relevant discipline
- Certificate in cultural competency and/or safety; EDID training is preferred
- Certificate in knowledge translation/mobilization would be an asset
Experience:
- 7 years’ experience in a research environment, including senior-level research development or administration
- Experience with international research funding programs and research partnerships such as preparing and writing high quality complex (e.g., consortium) research proposals with a track record of success
- Experience leading complex projects and strategic initiatives
- Experience managing staff and/or cross-functional teams
- Experience with international travel and brokering relationships with international partners
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- In-depth knowledge of international research funding landscapes (e.g., Horizon Europe and global funding programs)
- In-depth knowledge of the regulations and guidelines governing research in both a Canadian and international academic environment
- Openness to recognize when change is necessary, and to develop, implement and lead effective change management strategies
- In-depth knowledge of best practices in building a strong collaborative team and leading people and of best approaches for creating a shared vision
- Ability to maintain and develop an effective network of contacts that provide information regarding emergent opportunities and best practices
- Communication skills with the ability to converse with, write reports for, and deliver presentations to all levels of the organization
- Ability to deal confidentially with information that has financial, political, regulatory and reputational implications
- Ability to make decisions and recommendations that are clearly linked to the organization's strategy and goals
- Results-oriented with the ability to motivate and coach employees to meet high performance standards, while working effectively as a member of the leadership team
- Ability to recommend controls to manage operational and legal risks
- Project management skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously from conception to completion within tightly prescribed timelines
- Capacity to think and act at a strategic level and achieve operational requirements
