Opportunity
MacEwan University is seeking a Project Manager for a 18 month, full-time non-recurring term opportunity with the Infrastructure Planning and Management department.
Reporting to the Director, Planning and Projects, the Project Manager is responsible for leading the development, design, and construction of capital building projects, infrastructure improvement projects, and strategic university sponsored projects, valued at up to $20 million. This position supports university planning and operations with effective project delivery and contributes to the delivery of the university’s master plan. The Project Manager employs project management best practices and methods to ensure work is planned and executed to meet applicable University standards, quality, code, regulatory and stakeholder requirements.
Key responsibilities include:
Comprehensive Project Planning
- Developing a project scope statement as the basis for future project decisions, subdividing major project deliverables into manageable subset components;
- Identifying and formulating project work breakdown structures (WBS) and stakeholder breakdown structures (SBS); and
- Developing a project schedule, integrating activities and interdependencies, sequences and duration, while identifying/managing critical path milestones (CPM).
Project Execution
- Organizing and implementing project execution through effective mobilization and coordination of resources;
- Managing communications between internal and external stakeholders, including the coordination of design and construction meetings and inspections; and
- Coordinating the completion of detailed drawings and specifications of assigned capital, renovation or infrastructure project.
Project Control Measures
- Provideing status reporting regarding project milestones, deliverable, dependencies, risks and issues, and shares with Director and/or Project Sponsor(s);
- Developing and delivering progress reports, proposals, briefing notes, requirements documentation and presentations to various audiences, including project team, sponsors, and key stakeholders;
- Ensuring that projects are proceeding according to scope, schedule, budget and quality standards;
- Establishing and implementing effective project control measures to identify variances from plan; and
- Controlling variances with adjustments to the plan and taking preventative action in anticipation of possible variances.
Project Closeout
- Ensuring that all contracts are completed, settled and all open items are satisfactorily resolved;
- Generating, gathering and disseminating information to formalize project completion;
- Implementing evaluation processes to assess project results and compile lessons learned for use in planning future projects; and
- Ensuring all activities required for an effective transition to operations, maintenance and user groups is planned, delivered and complete.
Facilities Quality Management System (QMS)
- Contributing to the development and implementation of Project Team quality objectives that align with University and Facilities goals and objectives;
- Contributing to the continual improvement of the Project Team project methodology and delivery; and
- Supporting and coaching members of the Project Team to jointly achieve the goals of the Team and the University.

Skills
You will have:
- Knowledge of local, provincial and federal environmental standards, regulations and guidelines;
- Thorough understanding of project and program management principles, methods and techniques;
- Solid technical understanding and ability to define and refine requirements through a project lifecycle;
- The ability to problem-solve, assess situations, think critically, and apply sound judgment in providing recommendations and making timely and informed choices;
- Strategic thinking, analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills with keen attention to detail;
- The ability to act as a positive role model and develop trust by displaying honesty, integrity and ethical conduct at all times;
- The ability to lead project teams and encourage collaboration
- Budgetary expertise;
- Knowledge of change management and process management techniques;
- The ability to identify, assess and mitigate risks;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate and present complex subject matter, and effectively engage stakeholders by tailoring the messaging according to the type of audience;
- The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a broader team environment, with a self-motivated approach;
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to adapt to change and competing priorities and to meet deadlines;
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD and project management software including Microsoft Project and Primavera ; and
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
Qualifications
- A minimum of a degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Project Management or a related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience working in project management for architecture, planning, construction contract administration and small to medium scale capital building projects and initiatives valued at up to $20 million.
- Experience in project management such asbudgeting, project tracking, and scope control.
- Experience working within and applying local, provincial and federal environmental standards, regulations and guidelines.
- Experience working in an ISO 9001:2015 environment would be considered an asset.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification would be considered an asset.
- Experience performing this work in a post-secondary environment would be considered an asset.
- Accreditation or eligibility for accreditation with professional governing body in Alberta, (P.Eng. registered with APEGA, Registered Architect or ASET) would be considered an asset.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
