Day in the Life
The Grinding Superintendent is responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing all milling (grinding) operations for Miller projects. This is a hands‑on field leadership role requiring strong technical knowledge of milling equipment, the ability to lead and hold crews accountable, and a proactive approach to planning, productivity, and safety. The Superintendent ensures grinding work is completed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with Client specifications
Responsibilities
- Plan and execute milling operations in alignment with project schedules, drawings, and Client requirements
- Get operations started effectively through advanced planning of manpower, equipment, trucking, and sequencing
- Attend planning and coordination meetings to align grinding operations with paving, traffic control, and project teams
- Set clear expectations for grinding crews regarding production, safety, and quality
- Oversee multiple grinding crews including operators, labourers, sweepers, and forepersons
- Track crew hours in the field and ensure accurate time reporting
- Hold crews and individuals accountable for performance, attendance, safety, and productivity
- Provide leadership, coaching, and direction to field personnel
- Be hands‑on when required, including operating milling equipment
- Support crews directly to resolve field issues and maintain production
- Ensure equipment is set up correctly for depth, grade, and profile
- Monitor equipment recovery to manage performance, location, and utilization
- Coordinate equipment usage, maintenance, and troubleshooting to minimize downtime
- Communicate equipment needs or issues to maintenance and operations teams
- Ensure all milling work meets Client and contract specifications
- Always drive and hold people accountable to Miller’s safety policies and procedures
- Manage work in live traffic and night operations safely and effectively
- Other duties assigned
Qualifications
- 5+ years’ experience in road construction, with strong milling / grinding background
- Construction related degree or equivalent combinations of technical training and/or related experience is preferred
- Proven experience supervising crews in a Superintendent or General Foreperson capacity
- Ability to operate milling equipment and lead from the field
- Strong understanding of MTO standards and other Client specifications
- Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills
- Comfortable working long hours, nights, and weekends
- Strong commitment to Safety & Quality
- Valid G driver’s license
Compensation Data
Targeting $90,000 to $123,000 annual base salary
