Duties And Responsibilities

This is an external grant-funded position supported by the Federal Research Support Fund’s Incremental Project Grant. Reporting to and under the direction of the Associate Vice-President, Equity and Inclusive Communities, the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Research Officer will support the development and implementation of initiatives related to enhancing EDI in the research ecosystem for faculty, research staff, trainees, and partners across and beyond Carleton University. The EDI-Research Officer will seek opportunities to build upon and integrate these activities with other existing university-wide EDI initiatives and plans (including the ongoing university strategic planning process, EDI Action Plan, CRC EDI Action Plan, Coordinated Accessibility Strategy and the Kinàmàgawin report). This position is required to work collaboratively and positively with campus partners including in the Office of the Vice-President (Research, Innovation and International), Dean’s offices, the Provost’s and Deputy Provost’s Office, Office of Graduate Studies, Office of Institutional Research and Planning, Office of Indigenous Teaching, Learning, and Research, the Centre for Indigenous Support and Community Engagement, and the Accessibility Institute, along with student groups and external stakeholders.

Primary Duties Performed

Development, Implementation and Ongoing Monitoring of Dimensions cohort program activities (60%) support the recruitment, on-boarding, and activities of the Carleton’s new Self-Assessment Team (SAT) in consultation with EIC and OVPRII leadership represent Carleton University at meetings related to Dimensions program develop and implement a strategy for internal and external engagement and communications focused on EDI in research in consultation with the SAT and other campus offices and groups engage with external organizations to identify and contribute to emerging promising practices oversee the completion of an environmental scan with a focus on the Carleton research ecosystem, informed by a broader sensitivity to the full experience of Carleton as a postsecondary institution work with campus stakeholders to collect and analyze required quantitative and qualitative data to identify barriers and progress related to EDI at Carleton and relation to research in particular support the development and monitoring of a five-year Dimensions Action Plan Development, implementation and ongoing monitoring existing and new EDI initiatives related to Carleton’s research ecosystem (30%) support researchers, in consultation with colleagues in OVPRII and EIC, in developing, implementing and monitoring of program or project specific EDI Action Plans develop and deliver education and training to the Carleton research community regarding EDI in research in consultation with colleagues in EIC and academic Faculties develop professional development sessions and a toolkit for professional services staff and grant funded employees related to EDI in Research act as an expert resource for the campus community to advise on and support information sharing about best practices in EDI in research support EDI-related communications materials including for the OVPRII and EIC websites and for newsletters, listservs and a variety of other written materials seek opportunities to build upon and integrate these activities with other existing university-wide EDI-related initiatives and plans (including the ongoing university strategic planning process, EDI Action Plan, CRC EDI Action Plan, Coordinated Accessibility Strategy and the Kinàmàgawin report) Other duties related to EDI in Research as assigned (10%)

Qualifications

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Demonstrated passion, commitment and knowledge of EDI Knowledge of Canadian peer-review granting systems, processes and procedures related to EDI In-depth understanding of complex issues related to EDI, accessibility, anti-racism and decolonization as they relate to researcher, faculty and student experience and research impact Demonstrated understanding of systemic issues and of the legal and legislative frameworks related to EDI (e.g., Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)) Ability to assess situations using sound judgment and navigate sensitive and sometimes difficult conversations that can be emotionally charged Exceptional and persuasive communication skills and critical thinking skills to translate information into easily understood terms, summarize information and provide a rationale for action Demonstrated ability to understand and enable diverse viewpoints and approaches to achieve complex goals Proven ability to work well with diverse groups at all levels within the institution and external parties Ability to work independently, handle details with a high degree of accuracy and to organize and prioritize a high volume of work to meet deadlines Ability to work in a manner that models best practices in confidentiality, sensitivity and relationship building standards and treat sensitive information with discretion Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver educational sessions & resources to diverse stakeholders to increase their awareness of, and advance, EDI, decolonization, and anti-racism promising practices Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite Strong editing and proofreading abilities with attention to detail with emphasis on requirements for proposals, reports and presentations Experience working with Indigenous initiatives or with Indigenous communities including in policy or research would be an asset

Education And Experience

Education

Master’s degree directly related to social justice and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion is required. Areas of study that include as many of the following areas as possible is ideal: equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, anti-oppression, gender diversity, decolonialization, and accessibility. A PhD is preferred. OCAP (Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession) Certification and/or truth and reconciliation and/or decolonization training

Experience

Minimum of three years of relevant experience developing, advising, or supporting EDI within post-secondary environment or similar complex organizations Minimum of three years of relevant experience in project management and proven ability to align work priorities and strategic goals Demonstrated experience setting and managing a schedule, reviewing, developing and utilizing Research EDIA resources, and training diverse participants is required. Experience building relationships and offering differentiated support to diverse groups is required. An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
