The Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) provides the residents of the Northwest Territories with access to quality programs, services and support to assist them in making informed and productive choices for themselves and their families with regard to education, training, careers, employment and labour, child development, languages, culture and heritage.
Job Information
Are you passionate about education, culture, and connecting communities through storytelling and interpretation? The Curator, Heritage Education and Public Programs leads in-person activities at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, which is operated by the Department of Education, Culture and Employment within the Government of the Northwest Territories. The role brings history and culture to life through school programs, exhibits, public events, and outreach across the territory.
Working closely with schools, Indigenous governments, community partners, and cultural organizations, you will help shape meaningful learning experiences that reflect the diverse cultures and heritage of the Northwest Territories.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead heritage education and public programming for schools and the public
- Design, deliver, and evaluate museum education programs and learning resources
- Manage public programs including events, tours, lectures, and outreach initiatives
- Oversee interactive learning experiences
- Supervise interns, volunteers, and contractors
- Manage program budgets, and educational resources
- Create and maintain partnerships with a variety of organizations
- Develop and share educational materials with clients across the NWT
- Collaborate with educators, communities, and cultural partners
Qualifications & Experience
- A Degree in Education, History, Indigenous Studies, or similar fields, and 3 years of experience in Education, heritage interpretation, cultural or sciences centres, and/or delivering public programming.
- Strong knowledge of museum education and interpretation practices.
- Experience working with schools, communities, and in cross-cultural environments
- Strong communication, research, and organizational skills
- Commitment to cultural awareness, inclusion, and reconciliation
- Ability to work within a team in a dynamic, public-facing environment
Equivalencies:
- A Master's degree (in Education, History, indigenous Studies, or related fields) and minimum of 2 years of experience in education, heritage interpretation, multi-cultural or science centres, or delivering public programming.
- A Diploma (in Education, History, indigenous Studies, or related fields) and 5 years of experience in education, heritage interpretation, multi-cultural or science centres, or delivering public programming.
- Similar Fields= Anthropology, Archeology, Biology/Environmental Science, Social Sciences with a focus on Indigenous culture and heritage and/or natural history.
- Direct related experience= natural history or heritage interpretation to the pubic/design and delivery of instructional programming to children/experience with a focus on culture, heritage or natural history.
