Hybrid Job: This job offers the opportunity to work from home as part of a hybrid work arrangement. This arrangement will allow you to work some days at a TCHC work location and the rest of the time from home. The amount of time required to work at a TCHC work location is flexible, while considering operational and service delivery requirements.

Reporting to the Centre Director, this is an exciting opportunity to join the Centre for Advancing the Interests of Black People (The Centre) as a Community Advocacy Consultant. The Centre is entering a new phase of its strategic work, as we shift toward building frameworks and systems that facilitate thriving for Black tenants, staff, and communities.
This evolution emphasizes proactive community engagement, resilience-building, and fostering environments where Black residents and staff can flourish and achieve their fullest potential.
The Community Advocacy Consultant will be essential for leading intensive Centre-led community level efforts in targeted TCHC communities in Northwest Toronto, where in many neighborhoods have a significant majority of residents who identify as Black or of African descent. The role will collaborate across business units, TCHC regional staff, local stakeholders, as well as existing and emerging community partners to manage projects and support the delivery of equitable, accessible, and community informed programs, services and initiatives. This role also supports the advocacy work of the Centre’s Tenant Training Facilitators.
What You’ll Do
Lead and implement strategic initiatives in select Northwest Toronto TCHC neighborhoods Establishes key relationships and partnerships with B3 organizations in Northwest Toronto Maintains up to date knowledge about Black community service sectors, and builds relationships with other practitioners and experts Collaborate and consult with teams across business units, front-line staff, and residents as appropriate Provides project management expertise to others and leads projects Support project management activates performed by Tenant Workshop Facilitators, related to program design, development, and deliverables Lead and oversee the design of needs assessments, the development of processes, and the evaluation of program effectiveness Provides work direction to other management/exempt staff on a project by project basis Lead Centre engagement activities for strategic neighborhoods in West Region (Northwest Toronto) Educate staff and tenants about the Centre’s Thriving Framework Empower tenants and staff to use and engage the Centre effectively Assist staff and tenants to have the language to advocate their needs Work with external ABR consultants and trainers to organize education and training opportunities for front-line staff Organize engagement opportunities across the TCHC portfolio for tenants and front-line staff Liaise with Resolutions Coordinators and Policy, Planning and Coaching Consultants to identify possible learning opportunities Communicate, describe and present solution proposals to stakeholders and business units for approval Monitor compliance and program budgets Mentors, coaches and provide some work direction to Tenant Workshop Facilitators and Tenant Animators and provides leadership and guidance to resolve complex issues and ensures quality in service delivery. Play an advocacy role both internally and externally
What You’ll Need
5 + years’ experience leading community engagement/development initiatives with a focus on Black community empowerment Strong knowledge of anti-Black racism and anti-oppression principals Deep understanding of TCHC communities in Northwest Toronto, and the lived experiences of tenants in those neighborhoods who identify as Black, African, or as a Person of African Descent Demonstrated ability to formulate multi-level (unit, division and organization) plans and execute complex organization wide program implementations A proven ability to conduct preliminary research, analyze and interpret data, prepare reports and statements for Centre leadership, Senior Leadership, and the TCHC Board Strong knowledge of community-based education strategies is considered an asset is considered Strong consultancy, stakeholder engagement and co-design, and community program development experience Strong facilitation skills (in person and virtual) Working knowledge of change management and project management Experience managing several projects simultaneously both independently and with groups Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills Advanced Microsoft PowerPoint, Word and Excel skills Strong organizational, time management, prioritization, conceptual, and planning skills
