About the role

SAIT’s Applied Research and Innovation Services department helps partners conceptualize, prototype and deliver products to market. Join one of Canada’s top applied research colleges, innovate for the future and bring industry-generated ideas and game-changing technologies to life.

The Opportunity

Job classification: P2043 - Project Coordinator

Hourly rate: $45.00

Position end date: December 31, 2027

Deadline to apply: 4:00PM, May 22, 2026

This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Centre for Energy Research and Clean Unconventional Technology Solutions (CERCUTS) within Applied Research and Innovation Services (ARIS) at SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology).

The role will primarily focus on energy storage systems and battery research, with potential involvement in hydrogen and chemical process operations. Responsibilities may include prototyping and functional testing, bench- and pilot-scale design and operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, data analysis, and the development of safe, efficient, and compliant procedures aligned with industry quality, environmental, and regulatory requirements.

Reporting to the Research Chair and working under the guidance of Operations Leads, the successful candidate will play a key role in the establishment and execution of applied research and technology development projects, demonstrating a strong understanding of chemical, environmental, hydrocarbon processing, pipeline, refining, petrochemical, and workplace health and safety regulations.

How you'll contribute

Project Management and Coordination

  • Developing and operating bench or pilot prototypes, i.e. hydrogen and alternative fuel generators, battery prototypes, and high-pressure and temperature reactors, and processes.
  • Learning, setting up, and operating new equipment/instrument systems.
  • Planning and ensuring projects adhere to provided timelines, deliverables and activities.
  • Communicating plans, actions, risks, and issues with key stakeholders and other project team members.
  • Solving issues that may arise during the project in coordination with the Operations Lead, Research Chair and other research staff.
  • Managing and building relationships with multiple teams and other research groups.
  • Collaborate with schools/departments across SAIT on joint research opportunities.
  • Working with students and lab technologists in research
  • Engaging effectively in research outcome dissemination with industry partners and external parties.

Technical and Scientific Activities

  • Operating, troubleshooting, maintaining, and designing safe and efficient process units for conducting a variety of testing including electrochemical tests, electrical studies, and performance testing.
  • Leading method development and developing in-house methods with the input from principal investigators and research/laboratory technologists.
  • Creating process flow diagrams, process maps, and technical documentation.
  • Analyzing research and scientific data and preparing technical reports for internal and external contacts.
  • Ensuring research safe practices are followed by research technologists, including proper handling and disposal dangerous equipment, materials, or chemicals.

What you bring

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering with a strong focus on electrochemical engineering, redox chemistry, and/or energy storage system technologies.
  • Applicants must have completed their doctorate within the past two years.
  • 1–3 years of experience in energy storage system technology development and innovation, including designing, planning, and conducting battery research in a post-secondary or industry setting.
  • Hands-on experience with electrochemical control and testing equipment such as potentiostats (Biologic and Metrohm Autolab specifically), battery (charge/discharge) systems (e.g.,Landt, Maccor Chroma), charge controllers, pumps, and associated software.
  • Up to 1 year of experience conducting research in a post-secondary environment, with knowledge of research grants, federal funding guidelines, and applied research project management.
  • Experience collaborating with stakeholders, research staff, and multidisciplinary teams.

Skills

  • Strong understanding and practical knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), including the operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and design of process and experimental units.
  • Knowledge in redox flow batteries systems and fuel cell technology will be an asset.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory health and safety standards and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative research team.
