SUMMARY Reporting into the Engineering Manager, the Lead Surveyor is responsible for driving excellence in geomatics operations and field delivery. This role plays a key part in the surveying team and works closely with project staff and clients. You will lead field operations, oversee data processing, supervise crews, and act as the on-site technical expert. You will mentor junior staff, apply advanced Civil 3D expertise, and serve as the primary client liaison, ensuring precise and high-quality results. PRIMARY SCOPE OF ROLE Supervise daily operations of field crews; manage scheduling, task delegation, and resource allocation to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget. Train, mentor, and audit the work of junior surveyors and field technicians to maintain GCE’s high standards of accuracy. Enforce strict adherence to site-specific health, safety, and regulatory policies, ensuring all crew members operate safely. Establish, expand, and maintain highly accurate control networks. Direct and execute complex boundary, topographic, construction layout, and monitoring surveys using advanced Robotic Total Stations, GNSS/GPS receivers, drones, and other equipment. Oversee the calibration, maintenance, inventory tracking, and management of all high-end surveying instruments and equipment. Take full ownership of raw data post-processing, generating as-builts, adjustment of survey networks (least squares adjustments), and data analysis using Autodesk Civil 3D and specialized survey software. Prepare, review, and certify final survey plans, volume calculations, and CAD drawings for engineering and construction teams. Assist with the integration of surveying department with other GCE engineering and specialties functions. Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, project managers, and engineers regarding survey methodologies, progress updates, and technical discrepancies. Resolve complex conflicts on-site and provide strategic technical advice to clients. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Degree or Diploma in Geomatics Engineering, Surveying Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, or a strictly related field. 5+ years of progressive experience in construction surveying, geodetic control, and engineering surveys, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead capacity. Advanced, expert-level proficiency in Autodesk Civil 3D, Leica Captivate/Trimble Access, and network adjustment software. Deep understanding of coordinate systems, projections, datums, and the establishment of high-precision control networks. OLS (Ontario Land Surveyor) designation or working towards it is considered a major asset, though equivalent senior field/processing experience is highly valued. Proven track record of managing field crews, handling stressful project timelines, and interfacing directly with clients. Valid Ontario Driver’s License (Class G) with a clean driving record. Working Conditions Splitting time between high-level field operations/client meetings and office-based data processing/crew scheduling. Willingness to work outdoors in diverse Ontario weather conditions when leading field operations. Remain flexible toward evening and weekend work. WHAT WE OFFER Expected Base Salary: $100,000 - $120,000 per year. The actual base salary will depend on several factors including experience, qualifications, internal equity, work location and market expectations. Annual performance-based bonus.
