This is specialized recreation and cultural work involving the development, coordination and support of a variety of public special events and festivals in the City of Burnaby that are produced and managed by the City. The incumbent discusses and identifies potential special events with supervisors; checks feasibility and plans and develops public special event proposals; coordinates input and involvement of various departments and co-sponsors and appropriate stakeholders such as community safety and marketing; coordinates the implementation of the event and acts as the event day coordinator to ensure smooth operations; provides general site supervision as required; establishes and maintains effective working relations with a variety of internal and external contacts such as Municipal and Provincial agencies, community groups and neighbourhood stakeholders; assists with proposals for government and other agency grant funding; prepares events budget and monitors same; controls expenditures and takes corrective action to avoid cost overruns; approves requisitions for materials, supplies and event contractors. Performs related work as required.Qualifications include completion of a post-secondary diploma in recreation and/or culture administration, arts or related field (such as tourism), plus sound related experience preferably including some supervisory experience and experience working with large scale events or festivals; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. An incumbent will have considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, practices and techniques related to the work performed; sound knowledge of the applicable policies, regulations and rules governing the work. Sound knowledge of the interests and functions of community groups and agencies and of the available community and internal resources. Ability to plan, develop, implement and coordinate public special events and festivals; monitor event budgets and to prepare and maintain related reports, records, files, correspondence and promotional materials; recruit, orient, train, and direct the work of part-time staff and volunteers assisting with events.
