About the Opportunity

The Provincial Justice Coordinator supports and assists Métis people within a complex, challenging, and evolving provincial and federal justice systems. The position will manage a large-scale access to justice initiative with the objective of easing the challenges Métis people face as they navigate the complexities of the justice system. The initiative is an integral function of the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs that aims to address systemic barriers, current intersecting issues, and holistically supporting the individual through an integration of a trauma informed approach and Métis cultural values. This role requires significant strategic thinking, managing a complex initiative with intricate tasks, and directly supporting Métis people experiencing the justice system. The position will also directly coordinate services for the individual with various MNBC supports, justice partners, organizations, and community services.

The Provincial Justice Coordinator will work closely with the Director, Justice and Legal Affairs and other managers within the Ministry as it grows and evolves. The position is a central role at the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs and empowers innovative solutions by working independently and collectively with Métis people, and a strong and growing team.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages and coordinates an access to justice initiative through the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs by
  • Builds and fosters strong collaboration and relationships with MNBC ministries, government agencies, and community partners to support the access to justice initiative and provide education to external partners on MNBC supports.
  • Manages processes and sequences of tasks to improve efficiency and effectiveness across multiple justice areas while providing leadership and guidance to other MNBC Nation Supports.
  • Provides direct support for Métis people experiencing the justice system through a cultural and trauma informed approach by creating a safe environment where the individual feels respected, heard, and supported.
  • The level of support is dependent on the needs of the individual and may require travel for in person support. The direct support includes a variety of complex and intricate tasks which may include, but is not limited to the following:
    • Managing case files and maintaining accurate records of interactions, proceedings, and outcomes.
    • Aiding with understanding and fulfilling legal obligations, such as court appearances and legal orders.
    • Navigating and integrating various support services, including MNBC resources, legal aid, counselling, government resources, and community resources.
    • Scheduling and coordinating meetings with legal professionals, court officials, and support services.
    • Assisting and/or completing the preparation of documents, forms, and ensuring any criteria is met.
    • Ensuring that the needs and rights of Métis individuals are recognized and upheld throughout the legal process.
  • Manages the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs public email, phone lines, and responds to frontline service requests.
  • Maintains, organizes, and secures confidential records, files, and documents for the Ministry of Justice, ensuring meticulous accuracy, adherence to confidentiality, and compliance with organizational policies.
  • Supports efficient resource allocation, while conducting research to support the organizational goals for the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs through fund development and completing grant applications as necessary.
  •  Assists the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs in initiatives aimed at improving access to justice for Métis people and contribute efforts to reducing the amount of Métis people involved in the justice system.
  • Participates in committees and project teams as required.
  • Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of the position. 
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed to ensure the efficient operation of MNBC.
  • Regular/ occasional attendance at meetings/ events that may require work and travel outside of normal business hours.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in a related discipline such as criminology, justice studies, social work, or social sciences from a recognized, post-secondary institution. A bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  •  A minimum five (5) years’ experience in the legal or social sector services fields with experience in managing complex projects and providing services to individuals.
  • A combination of relevant experience, education, and training (including Indigenous education such as traditional knowledge and lived experience) will be considered.
  •  Previous experience working with Indigenous peoples, 2SLGBTQQIA+ people, and/or equity seeking groups through a trauma informed approach.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly in addressing sensitive and contentious subjects from an Indigenous perspective.
  • Demonstrated ability in teamwork, self-reliance, and proactive approaches with strong task-management skills.
  • Substantial knowledge on the complex, challenging, and evolving provincial and federal justice system and the impacts they have on Métis people.
  •  Knowledge and/or awareness of inclusive, strength based, and intersectional approaches.
  • Knowledge, acceptance, and understanding of MNBC structures, legislation, acts, and the historical and contemporary contributions made by Métis people in BC.
  • Physical abilities for the position include sedentary work, primarily involving sitting at a desk or workstation for extended periods.
  •  Knowledge and/or awareness of the historical and contemporary contributions made by Métis people in B.C.
  •  Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a Class 5 driver’s licence may be required.
  •  The position may require the completion of a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
