About the role

Development Lead, Affordable Housing

About HomeSpace Society

HomeSpace Society is a mission-driven nonprofit working at the intersection of affordable housing, community well-being, and cross-sector collaboration. We partner with public agencies, service providers, funders, and community organizations to deliver high-quality, sustainable housing that serves Calgarians most in need.

At HomeSpace, our Development Lead supports the delivery of affordable housing projects from early planning through construction and occupancy—helping coordinate municipal approvals, funding requirements, and construction activities within a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.

A Day in the Life

No two days at HomeSpace look the same. As a Development Lead, you will support the coordination and delivery of multiple active projects while working closely with internal team members, consultants, and external partners.

You will help keep projects organized, moving forward, and aligned through strong coordination, communication, and attention to detail.

Your work will include:

  • Supporting the delivery of projects through all phases of development—from site feasibility, planning and regulatory approvals, funding, design, construction, and occupancy—ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, funder requirements, budgets, and schedules
  • Coordinating municipal approval processes, including development permits, land use amendments, subdivisions, and building permits, in collaboration with City of Calgary staff and external consultants
  • Supporting projects using modular, prefabricated, or other modern construction methods, and understanding how these approaches impact coordination, timelines, and cost
  • Assisting with consultant and contractor coordination, including tracking scope, deliverables, schedules, and change management items
  • Working closely with internal team members, including Project Coordinators, to support documentation, tracking, and communication across projects
  • Building and maintaining effective working relationships with consultants, contractors, manufacturers, municipal partners, funders, and community stakeholders
  • Supporting project meetings by preparing updates, tracking action items, and ensuring follow-through on decisions
  • Identifying risks, issues, and coordination challenges early and escalating appropriately to senior team members
  • Supporting funding applications, reporting, and compliance requirements across municipal, provincial, federal, and philanthropic programs
  • Participating in community engagement activities as required, including meetings with community associations and stakeholders
  • Supporting project documentation, reporting, and internal information sharing
  • Assisting in the transition of projects from development to operations, including documentation handover and coordination with property management teams

Some days will be meeting-heavy; others will focus on coordination, tracking, and follow-up. In all cases, your role is to help ensure clarity, momentum, and successful project delivery.

What You Bring

  • Post-secondary education in architecture, engineering, construction management, planning, or a related field
  • 2-5 years of experience in real estate development, project coordination, construction, or cost consulting
  • Experience supporting municipal approval processes (development permits, land use applications, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of project coordination, budgets, schedules, and risk tracking
  • Exposure to modular, prefabricated, or alternative construction methods is an asset
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite

Assets for Success

  • Experience in affordable housing, nonprofit, or public-sector environments

  • Familiarity with affordable housing funding programs and reporting requirements

  • Experience working with consultants, municipalities, or construction teams on complex projects

  • Exposure to multi-stakeholder coordination environments

What We’re Looking for in You

  • Strong Coordinator and Delivery Mindset: You help keep complex projects organized and moving forward

  • Clear Communicator: You provide accurate updates and support alignment across teams and partners
