The Opportunity Rocky View County is seeking an experienced planner for a Regional Planner / Senior Regional Planner opportunity. Appointment will be made at the level that best aligns with the successful candidate’s qualifications, experience, and demonstrated competencies. This role supports and helps lead regionally significant planning initiatives, including Intermunicipal Development Plans, master plans, and other strategic policy work in a growing municipality. The position requires strong knowledge of Alberta’s planning and legislative framework, political awareness, project management experience, and the ability to build effective working relationships with municipal partners, agencies, and internal stakeholders. Core Accountabilities Participate in provincial, regional, and sub-regional committees, advisory groups, and intermunicipal meetings. Research, analyze, and provide advice on regional and sub-regional planning matters. Support the development and review of policy plans, context studies, and other strategic planning documents. Coordinate and respond to referrals from internal departments, regional partners, and government agencies. Monitor and review relevant legislation, policy, plans, and emerging planning issues. Prepare reports, recommendations, and presentations for Council, senior leadership, committees, external stakeholders, and intermunicipal decision-making bodies. Represent Rocky View County in regional planning processes, including intermunicipal planning initiatives and provincial planning discussions. Build collaborative relationships that support intermunicipal planning and advance County interests. Provide guidance to internal staff and stakeholders on regional planning matters. Additional accountabilities at the Senior level: Lead complex planning projects and oversee assigned technical and clerical support resources. Mentor team members and support development of less experienced planners. Manage consultant contracts, consultation processes, and multi-disciplinary project teams. Lead or support the preparation, review, and implementation of strategic policy documents and programs. Deliver presentations to Council, boards, committees, and public audiences. Position Requirements Bachelor's degree in Planning or a related field. Minimum 5 years of professional planning experience; public sector experience is an asset. CIP and/or APPI membership and RPP designation are assets. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and manage assignments effectively in a team environment. Strong knowledge of Alberta’s provincial, regional, and municipal planning legislation, policies, and statutory planning documents. Understanding of planning in a rural municipal context and of intermunicipal relationships and interests. Strong project management, research, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal, and presentation skills. Ability to manage competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Valid Class 5 driver’s licence. Additional requirements for the Senior level: Extensive knowledge of rural, urban, and regional planning and their interrelationships. Demonstrated experience leading increasingly complex projects, managing consultants and project budgets, coordinating multi-disciplinary teams, and providing team leadership. Strong facilitation, mediation, negotiation skills, and consensus-building skills. Proven ability to present effectively to a range of audiences in formal and informal settings. Demonstrated experience providing strategic advice to senior leadership, Council, boards, and committees. We thank applicants for their interest.
