About Musqueam

We are traditional hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking people. Today, we are a strong, growing community of over 1,300 members. We live on a small portion of our traditional territory, known as the Musqueam Indian Reserve, located south of Marine Drive near the mouth of the Fraser River. The name Musqueam relates back to the River Plant, the name of the plant is məθkʷəy̓. There is a story that has been passed on from generation to generation that explains how we became known as the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) - People of the River Plant. We have always moved throughout our territory using the resources it provides for fishing, hunting, trapping and gathering. We remain distinct and our cultural practices are strong, despite the devastating impacts of residential schools, colonial laws banning our ceremonies, and other attempts to assimilate our people. Our lands and waters continue to support our cultural and economic practices while serving as a source of knowledge and memory, encoded with our teachings and laws. Position Summary

The Assistant Manager, Language and Culture supports the Manager in the daily operations of the Language and Culture Program, ensuring smooth delivery of hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language and cultural initiatives. This role provides hands-on coordination of departmental activities, staff supervision in the absence of the Manager, and operational oversight of programming and resource management.

The Assistant Manager plays a key role in ensuring continuity of services, supporting community-based language learning, and maintaining strong working relationships with internal departments, community members, educators, and external partners.

This position is operational in nature, with responsibility for supporting implementation of program goals, maintaining systems and workflows, and ensuring day-to-day deliverables are met. The Assistant Manager also contributes to the long-term goal of language revitalization by assisting in documentation, program coordination, and community engagement.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Supports the daily operations of the Language and Culture Department, ensures timely communication and delivery to internal and external proponents.
  • Coordinates scheduling of classes, workshops, events, and community programming.
  • Ensures program activities are delivered on time and aligned with departmental priorities.
  • Acts as first point of contact in the absence of the Manager.
  • Helps ensure staff follow established procedures, cultural protocols, and safety guidelines.
  • Provides day-to-day guidance and task delegation as directed by the Manager.
  • Supports delivery of hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language programming across community groups and administration.
  • Maintains program records, files, attendance, and reporting documentation.
  • Supports preparation of program updates, summaries, and reports.
  • Supports coordination and note taking of internal communications and departmental planning meetings.
  • Supports the delivery of departmental action items.
  • Assists in collecting, organizing, and maintaining language and cultural materials.
  • Supports transcription, digitization, and archiving of language resources under direction.
  • Supports communication, coordination, and delivery of requests with external partner.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • 5–7 years of experience working with the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language. Minimum of three years of UBC CIS MLP-FNEL program (101/102, 201/202, and 301).
  • Knowledge of hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language and/or demonstrated commitment to learning and supporting language revitalization.
  • Experience working within a First Nations community, with elders, and knowledge holders is preferred.
  • Excellent knowledge of hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ in both written and spoken forms and understanding of the important syntactical, morphological and phonological systems through which the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ languages operates.
  • Excellent English communication skills.
  • Experience preparing and delivering lessons in both small and large group settings
  • Skill, speed, and accuracy in the use of computers.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment, with the ability to work and engage with other departments and the community.
  • Ability to translate accurately and develop meaningful lesson plans.
  • Good knowledge of budget preparation and alternate sources of funding.
  • Skill in locating sources outside funding, preparation of funding proposals, and acquiring the funds.
  • Skill and knowledge in development and presentation of program progress reports.
  • Criminal Records Check.

Working Conditions

  • The work is performed mostly in an office environment.
  • Evening work may be required.
