The Opportunity

The Grande Prairie Police Service is seeking a Policing Standards & Compliance Lead for a one (1) year temporary term to support critical organizational priorities as the Service advances toward full police of jurisdiction status.

Reporting to the Chief of Police, this role will lead and coordinate key administrative and operational initiatives, with a primary focus on policy development, compliance, and audit readiness.

This position will play a central role in ensuring that GPPS policies, procedures, and practices align with the Police Act, Alberta Policing Standards, and provincial requirements. The role will also serve as the primary liaison for Policing Standards audits and compliance activities.

Responsibilities

Project Coordination & Implementation Lead and support administrative and operational projects aligned with GPPS transition priorities, ensuring timely delivery and organizational alignment. Policy Development & Proofing - Lead the development, review, and validation (“proofing”) of policies, procedures, and standard operating guidelines. Maintain consistency, accuracy, and audit-readiness of documentation. Align all materials with the Police Act and Alberta Policing Standards. Ensure all policy frameworks meet requirements for police of jurisdiction operations. Policing Standards Liaison & Audit Coordination Act as the primary liaison with Alberta Policing Standards. Coordinate audit preparation, documentation, and response activities. Ensure ongoing compliance and readiness for inspections, audits, and reviews. Strategic & Transition Support Support implementation of transition activities related to governance, operations, and compliance. Identify gaps and risks impacting readiness for police of jurisdiction status. Research & Best Practices Conduct research and environmental scans to support modern policing practices and continuous improvement. Risk & Compliance Management Support identification and mitigation of compliance, operational, and reputational risks. Stakeholder Engagement Collaborate with internal units, leadership, and external partners to support policy alignment and operational readiness. Reporting & Documentation Prepare reports, audit materials, briefings, MOU’s and other documentation for senior leadership and regulatory bodies. Qualifications

Post-secondary education in public administration, criminal justice, business, or a related discipline. Equivalent experience will be considered. Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in policing, public safety, government, or a regulatory environment. Demonstrated knowledge in the Alberta Police Act, Regulations and Alberta Policing Standards is required. Proven experience in policy development, review, and implementation, particularly in regulated or compliance-driven environments. Experience supporting or coordinating audits, inspections, or compliance reviews is strongly preferred. Strong project management, organizational, and analytical skills. Excellent written communication skills, particularly in policy writing and formal reporting. Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced and evolving environment. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively across teams and with external stakeholders. Knowledge of equity, diversity, and inclusion principles in a public sector context.

Conditions of Employment

Must obtain and maintain the required level of security clearance. Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License (or equivalent). Successful completion of background and reference checks. Proof of qualifications required.

Compensation

Wages for this position range from $58.79 - $75.98 ($122,283.20 - $158,038.40)
