About the Opportunity
Our client is seeking an experienced Health, Safety & Security Manager to join the owner's team on the construction of a major gold mining operation in British Columbia. This is a unique opportunity to play a key leadership role during the development of a new mine from the ground up. Working within a fast-paced project environment, you will lead the site's Health, Safety and Security function throughout the construction phase while helping establish the culture, systems and standards that will support safe operations into production. This is a site-based contract position on a two weeks on / two weeks off rotation, with travel provided from your point of residence. The contract is expected to run for approximately 2 to 2½ years through construction and project completion.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting directly to the General Manager, you will provide leadership and oversight for all health, safety and site security activities across the owner's team, the Project/Construction Management (PCM/EPCM) contractor, and multiple subcontractors. Provide leadership, coaching and mentorship to the site Health & Safety team. Strengthen and continuously improve the project's Health & Safety management systems and programs. Foster a strong, proactive safety culture across all project participants. Ensure consistent implementation of health and safety standards across the owner, contractors and subcontractors. Lead incident prevention initiatives and support continuous improvement efforts. Develop and implement site-wide safety orientation, training and education programs for employees and contractors. Oversee the contracted site security workforce, ensuring effective security operations and loss prevention practices. Support the development and implementation of an integrated site-wide loss control program. Build strong working relationships with project leadership, contractors and field personnel to promote safe work practices. Monitor compliance with applicable legislation, corporate standards and project requirements. Provide regular reporting, analysis and recommendations to senior site leadership.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will bring: Extensive Health & Safety leadership experience supporting major mining, heavy industrial or large capital construction projects. Demonstrated experience leading Health & Safety programs during the construction of new mining operations or other large industrial facilities. Previous experience supporting a mine start-up or greenfield project is considered a significant asset. Experience managing Health & Safety performance across multiple contractors and subcontractors within an owner's project team. Experience overseeing contracted security personnel and site security programs. Strong understanding of construction safety management systems, risk management and loss control principles. Proven ability to develop, implement and continuously improve Health & Safety management systems. Experience mentoring and developing Health & Safety professionals. Excellent leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence personnel at all levels of the organization. Thorough knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation and industry best practices. Mining industry experience, particularly within underground mining projects, is highly desirable.
