Position Summary
The Logistics Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Specialist is responsible for leading the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the organization’s Logistics HSE Management System. This role plays a critical part in driving a strong safety culture by fostering proactive relationships across the organization and ensuring compliance with all applicable Canadian HSE legislation, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) requirements, and other regulatory standards.
The HSE Specialist supports the deployment of industry best practices, promotes continuous improvement, and ensures that health, safety, environmental, and quality standards are consistently upheld across all logistics operations.
Reporting Structure
This role reports directly to the Regional HSE Lead – West and maintains close working relationships with the McAsphalt Logistics National Trucking Manager, the HSE team across Canada, and the Director of HS.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, implement, and maintain integrated HSE management frameworks covering operational, business, quality, and risk management systems. Monitor, review, and interpret applicable regulations; communicate regulatory changes and support the implementation of required actions. Design, implement, and manage industry-leading HSE programs, including the establishment of corporate standards, targets, and performance metrics. Build and maintain strong working relationships with operational teams to identify business risks and support safe, compliant operations. Lead or participate in cross-functional and multidisciplinary project teams. Develop and maintain corporate emergency response, contingency planning, and business continuity programs; ensure consistent review and regional compliance. Conduct incident investigations and manage claims in coordination with Human Resources and applicable provincial workers’ compensation boards. Attend accident, incident, and near-miss scenes, as required. Administer and monitor provincial workers’ compensation programs. Analyze HSE performance data and drive continuous improvement initiatives through the development and implementation of effective management practices. Provide leadership, guidance, tools, and training to management and staff to enhance HSE awareness, efficiency, and effectiveness. Maintain and support annual reviews and updates of the organization’s HSE manual to ensure alignment with current regulatory and industry standards. Facilitate safety committees and employee engagement programs. Evaluate work procedures and environments to identify hazards and ensure appropriate controls are implemented.
Qualifications
Class 1 driver’s license (or equivalent) considered an asset. Minimum 3 years of supervisory or leadership experience Associates degree in OHS an asset CTSC certification an asset Strong leadership capabilities, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels of the organization. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience interacting with regulatory agencies. Working knowledge of COR certification requirements and processes. COR auditor certification In-depth knowledge of Canadian occupational health, safety, and environmental legislation, including policy development, field implementation, and auditing. Experience in HSE, security, and emergency response leadership. Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions and recommendations that support business continuity and risk mitigation. Strong interpersonal and presentation skills, with the ability to train, coach, and collaborate effectively. Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, multi-site environment. Experience supporting large geographic regions or multi-site operations.
