The role

We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Designer to support our Design and Fabrication Services Branch (DFS). The Senior Mechanical Designer would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

Design and Fabrication Services (DFS) is the National Research Council’s (NRC) principal design and fabrication organization, supporting research and innovation. DFS supports NRC research by continuously delivering improvements to key national test facilities as well as directly through engineering, design and fabrication support to individual research portfolios, programs and projects.

The successful candidate will be managing complex projects, generating sophisticated CAD designs and detailed drawing packages for the fabrication of experimental equipment. The emphasis is on creating designs and drawings that accurately capture the design specifications and can be readily interpreted by fabrication staff. The incumbent undertakes and/or provides support to projects with specific design requirements either individually or by delegating work packages and mentoring junior staff.

Screening criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

Diploma from an institute of technology (2400 Hr. Program) in mechanical technology.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.

Experience

  • Recent* and significant** experience with 3D model generation and producing detailed fabrication drawings using 3D CAD software, such as Solid Works.

  • Knowledge of 3D scanning and reverse engineering tools.

  • Recent* and significant** experience with managing large complex projects, negotiating timelines, budget, scope, and client expectations.

  • Experience working with engineering standards: ASME Y14.5, 14.100, Mil-DTL-31000C, AN, MS, SAE, and NAS.

  • Recent is defined as within the last five years

** Significant is defined as at least 3 years of experience.

Condition of employment

Secret clearance

A thorough security clearance process will be applied.

For a Secret Clearance, verification of background information over a period of 10 years is required. Individuals must have lived in Canada for a sufficient period of time to enable the security screening process.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical competencies

  • Significant ability to generate advanced 3D models and detailed fabrication drawings.
  • Significant knowledge of engineering materials and their selection/application.
  • Significant knowledge of engineering analysis methods.
  • Significant knowledge of manufacturing processes including machining, sheet metal, welding, composites, and rapid prototyping.
  • Significant ability to manage large, complex projects from conceptual design through to manufacturing and installation using standard project management techniques.

Compensation

From $83,435 to $107,838 per annum.
