The Real Estate Division at the UBC Sauder School of Business is a globally recognized leader in the development and provision of regulatory/licensing, certification, and credit educational programs for the real estate profession. The Real Estate Division offers a comprehensive range of top-calibre, industry-driven distance education programs that serve the needs of the real estate community locally, nationally, and internationally.
The Real Estate Education Associate is integral to the Division's academic integrity. Typical responsibilities include developing course, assignment, and examination materials; participating in curriculum reviews, program planning, and needs assessments; liaising with instructors, consultants, and external organizations; course management duties including overseeing the student experience, managing student academic issues and performing quality checks on courses before launch; developing new or redesigning existing materials to meet client needs; acting as a content expert and academic advisor to a wide range of students; and assisting in developing marketing plans for the Division's educational programs.
This role may require some travel within and outside Canada.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Associate Director. Consults with the Division’s senior academic and management team in seeking direction on course development and program planning. Liaises with instructors, consultants, and external organizations. Manages employees directly and indirectly and responds to the educational needs of a nationally distributed student audience.
Work Performed
Academic Operations
Exercises judgment in maintaining the academic integrity of the Division's courses and examinations. Develops course, assignment, and examination materials. Provides academic expertise in the development and production of program offerings where expertise is appropriate. Supports the Associate Directors in the management of the workflow of the Division's curriculum production and delivery teams. Hires and advises summer and part-time tutors on academic issues, provides tutorial instruction, and responds to student enquiries that go beyond part-time Real Estate Research and Content Development Assistant (RCA) capabilities.
Program Development
Contributes to the planning and development of the Division's numerous programs and their related examinations, balancing the need for customer-focused student services with maintaining the academic and regulatory integrity and security of the programs. Evaluates program offerings for ongoing effectiveness and recommends and pursues improvements as necessary. Facilitates coordination between numerous teams (e.g., production specialists, subject-matter experts, information technology, etc.) to create learning assets using various learning management systems and technologies to support student learning and engagement. Prepares and redesigns procedural guidelines and policies to meet educational and organizational goals. Participates in ongoing evaluation to identify new and existing curricular requirements.
Student Relations
Contributes to the Division's complex public relations activities. Acts as a content and academic advisor to a wide range of students and addresses academic policy issues with students by applying conflict resolution skills, an in-depth knowledge of program content and education technology, as well as a specific knowledge of the policies applicable to the Division's various programs and general knowledge of the issues related to the educational programs of regulatory organizations and professional associations. Performs other duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Real Estate Education Associate is expected to exercise judgment in establishing priorities, carrying tasks through to completion, and referring issues to more senior staff. Decisions made will have a direct impact on program offerings and on students’ experiences with those programs. Poor decisions could negatively impact the organization's reputation with students and with industry stakeholders, and ultimately, affect profitability.
Supervision Received
Reports to and works under the direction of the Associate Directors. Work is reviewed with respect to effectiveness and progress towards objectives. Consults with Associate Directors, who provide direction on course development and program planning.
Supervision Given
Responsible for managing the workflow of both internal and external authors, editors, tutors, and graders, as well as various full- and part-time staff involved in academic operations, course, and examination production and delivery. Manages staff directly and indirectly and responds to the educational needs of a nationally distributed student audience.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of four years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
An undergraduate degree in real estate, urban land economics, or finance is preferred. General business or economics is a secondary preference. Knowledge of the real estate industry in Canada and internationally. Knowledge of effective instructional design and techniques related to professional adult learning, learning management systems and other educational technologies Project management experience. A well-developed understanding of the competitive nature of professional real estate education. Conflict resolution skills. Sound judgement and problem-solving skills. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous, and effective manner. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. Ability to multitask, adapt to changing priorities, prioritize work, take initiative, and simultaneously work with various staff, internal and external experts, and clients. Ability to maintain accuracy and pay close attention to detail. Ability to travel within and outside Canada.
