About Ontario Shipyards

Ontario Shipyards operates two premier marine facilities on Lake Ontario: our main fabrication hub in Hamilton and the historic Port Weller Dry Docks on the Welland Canal in St. Catharines. Together, we form the largest Canadian-owned ship repair and refit operation on the Great Lakes. As a trusted partner to the Canadian Coast Guard and major commercial fleets, our combined yards deliver everything from advanced manufacturing to massive vessel life extensions.

The company is embarking on an unprecedented period of growth driven by the opportunities created by Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy. At the same time, the company is executing the Ontario Shipyard Modernization Project (OSMP) which is a multi-million-dollar initiative that is revolutionizing shipyard operations in Ontario and ultimately Canada. Our team takes immense pride in keeping the Great Lakes fleet moving, building and maintaining the giant vessels that drive Canada's economy – where water meets mettle.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Lead Deputy Project Manager, the Project Manager works alongside the Project Office, Production Managers, and the Planning team. You will be directly responsible for planning, executing, monitoring, controlling, and closing complex marine projects safely. Unlike standard desk project management jobs, our environment requires project managers to physically walk the ships, shops, and dry docks daily to verify progress firsthand. Your main goal is to turn technical scopes and timelines into clear deliverables while managing project financials, controlling costs, and overseeing every phase of the project from initiation to final sign-off.

Key Responsibilities

Define the project’s scope with the Tendering Department and develop comprehensive project schedules and man-loading documents using Primavera P6.

Assign, prioritize, and supervise project tasks, set milestones and deadlines, manage resources, control costs, and assist the Purchasing Department with material procurement.

Track project performance using appropriate KPIs and report progress to the Lead Deputy Project Manager on a weekly basis.

Proactively identify, prevent, and manage risks while handling project changes and communicating change orders back to the Tendering Department.

Submit deliverables that strictly adhere to quality standards and create detailed project documentation, including pictorial and inspection reports.

Manage all client communications, organize and lead meetings, and maintain overall customer satisfaction.

Collaborate with all Supervisors and skilled trades to provide necessary information and resources, serve as a technical resource for the department, and develop continuous improvement practices.

Perform any other relevant, project-related duties when needed to support shipyard operations.

Qualifications & Experience

Degree or Diploma in Engineering (Marine Engineering is preferred; Mechanical or Civil engineering will be considered with marine experience).

PMP certification is considered an asset.

3–5 years construction experience as a Project Manager, Project Engineer, or Project Coordinator.

Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum of 3 years experience in marine repair, maintenance, and/or construction, including the scheduling and sequencing of marine work.

Demonstrated experience working with skilled trades to complete work.

Ability to read and understand engineered design drawings.

Strong computer skills including experience with Primavera P6, Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel, Word and Project), CAD, etc.
