Job Description: The Deputy Project Manager in the Highways and Freeways group will support the delivery and growth of our Transportation Engineering practice for the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO). This role requires a strong understanding of MTO standards, policies, practices, delivery models, and client expectations. Working closely with senior project managers and technical leads, you will help coordinate teams of Highway Engineers and Design Specialists on a variety of multidisciplinary transportation projects of varying complexity, including the rehabilitation, replacement, widening, and/or expansion of highways and freeways. Key Responsibilities Support the delivery and coordination of MTO transportation projects across Ontario, from planning through execution, helping ensure milestones, schedules, and goals are achieved. Assist with design development on a variety of projects, including functional studies, preliminary design, and detail design. Contribute to the management of multidisciplinary transportation projects, including rehabilitation, replacement, widening, and/or expansion of highways and freeways. Coordinate project teams, including engineers, designers, and subcontractors, under the direction of the Project Manager. Support communication with MTO and other stakeholders, helping maintain strong client relationships and resolve project issues in a timely manner. Assist in preparing detailed project plans, schedules, and budgets, working with cross-functional teams to support integrated and comprehensive engineering solutions. Monitor project timelines, budgets, and performance to help ensure compliance with MTO requirements and internal quality standards. Identify project risks and issues early and work with the Project Manager and technical teams to develop practical solutions that minimize delays and cost impacts. Support the successful completion of project tasks such as field investigations, geometric design, grading design, roadside safety design, drainage design, storm sewer design, pavement marking and signage design, construction staging design, traffic management, roadway modelling, quantity estimating, utility coordination, contract drawing preparation, contract document preparation, construction cost estimate development, and construction liaison. Prepare and coordinate technical reports, submissions, and documentation for clients, ensuring quality and technical accuracy of project deliverables. Assist with business development activities, including proposal preparation, project methodology development, work programs, schedules, and budgets. Provide support to senior project managers in tracking action items, maintaining project controls, and coordinating internal and external project meetings. Requirements University degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related professional discipline. Licensed professional engineer. 5+ years of MTO experience. 5+ years of project coordination, assistant project management, or project management experience, preferably on MTO projects. Experience supporting MTO Preliminary Design, Detail Design, and Class Environmental Assessments. Strong Highway Engineering knowledge, with working knowledge of related transportation disciplines including geotechnical, pavement design, structural, drainage, surveys, electrical, traffic, environmental processes, and construction practices. Strong communication, coordination, and organizational skills, with the ability to work effectively with remote or hybrid teams. Knowledge of MTO standards and policies, and a solid understanding of Ontario transportation infrastructure project delivery. This position is part of our Critical Infrastructure team. Requirements
Candidates must hold a university degree in Civil or Transportation Engineering and be a licensed professional engineer. A minimum of 5 years of experience with MTO projects and project management is required.
