Description of Role:

Reporting to the CFO the Senior Project Accountant’s main responsibility will be monitoring the expenses in NWAC’s projects and programs. The SPA will work directly with the senior managers of their assigned projects to oversee all financial aspects of the projects from budget preparation, to signing off on expenses, to management and statutory reporting, to final financial report.

In addition to the projects and programs responsibilities, the SPA will play a key role in supporting the Manager Corporate Accounting and the accounting staff processing all financial transactions. The position will also work on special projects and provide financial analysis to Senior Management.

Education, Experience and other requirements:

  • Bachelor of Commerce or equivalent;
  • Professional Accounting designation;
  • Three years in a financial analyst role or equivalent;
  • Strong understanding of and demonstrated commitment to the principles, values and mandate of the Native Women’s Association of Canada;
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal Peoples in Canada, their cultures, histories, and traditions;
  • Ability to celebrate and manage cultural diversity;
  • Expert knowledge of GAAP and other financial regulations;
  • Ability to analyze financial information and make sound recommendations to the managers of the projects;
  • Strong team player able to work with many different project teams;
  • Able to manager deliverables from a number of projects and meet all deadlines;
  • Proficient at Excel
  • Experience with Sage 300 preferred


Fluency in English is essential. Bilingualism is a strong asset.

Responsibilities Include:

Project Accounting

  • Support project staff developing new projects by advising them of NWAC project budget standards, costing out project deliverables and work plans, and preparing final formatted budget for proposals submission;
  • Ensure that all new project budgets have overhead recovery in line with NWAC requirements;
  • Provide CFO with final project budgets prior to project proposal submission;
  • When new projects are funded work with the Project Manager to formulate detailed work plan and calendarized budget;
  • Responsible for NWAC adherence to conditions in Contribution Agreements, including eligible expenses, overhead recovery, in-kind contributions, etc.
  • Input the chart of accounts and budget to SAGE 300 for new projects;
  • Provide the Manager Corporate Accounting with details for project staff payroll and benefits allocations;
  • Ensure all project expenditures are approved by Project Managers and that there are funds available in the budget;
  • Track project advance payments to ensure they are received in a timely manner and inform Manager Corporate Accounting of amounts and timing of deposits to NWAC bank;
  • Provide CFO with all financial reports for Funders in time to meet reporting requirements as per the Contribution Agreements;
  • On a monthly basis record all indirect revenue for projects being managed;
  • Provide financial reports and forecasts to Project Managers as required;
  • Provide financial forecasts to CFO and Manager Corporate Accounting as required;
  • Provide input to NWAC’s annual budget from all projects under responsibility;
  • Notify CFO of an issues with the projects that could have a detrimental affect on NWAC;


  • Account for New Building under construction including,
    • Review all invoices from Construction Company prior to signing off for payment;
    • Ensure all payment transactions for the building are properly captured in the GL;
    • Track the mortgage payments and ensure the principle and interest is properly recorded;
    • Track the balance in the Trust Fund and record the Tax Rebates due to NWAC
  • Account for Sales Tax payable and rebates including,
    • Monitor AP transactions to ensure sales tax rebates are being captured properly;
    • Monitor on-line store sales to ensure proper taxes are collected in each province;
    • Prepare sales tax returns based on established reporting time frames;
    • Ensure all rebates claimed are received in a timely manner and all taxes payable are remitted on time;
    • Educate Finance team on sales tax issues
  • Develop new project financial reports for Senior Management;
  • Develop key performance indicators for projects and report on them each month;
  • Develop Finance Manual for Project Accounting;
  • Prepare adhoc reports for projects, payroll, HR,
  • Provide support to Manager Corporate Accounting or CFO as required.
