Reporting to the Manager of Urban Design, the Project Supervisor is responsible for coordinating and supervising the overall program related to special projects and initiatives led by the Urban Design division as part of the Planning and Urban Design Department, and the division’s review of projects led by other City departments and external agencies. This requires project management expertise in the implementation of strategies and processes to ensure timely completion of projects that are of high quality and within budget. As an organized person you have the ability to incorporate the latest technologies and best practices into your everyday work.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Supervise and lead the overall program that includes special projects, policies and initiatives led by the Urban Design division or various City departments and external agencies to support the coordination, implementation and monitoring consistent with leading industry best practices
• Prepare or support in the development of the Project Charter for all Urban Design special projects, and determine the applicable approach for each project in terms of required documentation, contingency plans, and roles, responsibilities and accountability of project team members
• Prepare project Terms of Reference, coordinate the Request for Proposal (RFP) and bid evaluation process, and manage consultant teams
• Effectively assess and manage scope, budget, schedule and risks of projects consistent with the applicable organizational processes, policies and by-laws
• Develop and maintain project management standards and methods, and be a project management resource to coach and guide Urban Design staff in project management methodology to ensure the successful outcome of projects
• Present project milestones and recommendations to Senior Management and Council, as required
• Track and communicate progress of project deliverables and achievement of outcomes to senior management
• Responsible for performance reviews, training programs and incentives for staff
• Lead and support change management initiatives
• Act on behalf of the Urban Design Manager as required and other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor or Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture, Urban Design or related discipline, additional education or degree in Architecture or Planning an asset
• 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in the Planning and Urban Design field
• Eligibility for membership in OALA, OAA, OPPI, or related professional organization
• Project Management Professional (PMP) designation in good standing or working towards a PMP designation with the Project Management Institute considered an asset
• Strong team leadership skills
• Strong understanding of built form, public realm and community design in terms of principles, policies and best practices in urban design, planning, architecture, landscape architecture etc.
